Woodworking Tips Cards – Making Your Own Tools

brian forbes westfarthing woodworks author biography about me experience

This woodworking tips card is about making your own tools. As a beginner, some of the best projects are about making tools. You can make several different useful tools, and all of them will help you learn about woodworking. They will also reward you with new tools in the end. Here is why this is so important.

Woodworking Tips – Making Your Own Tools

woodworking tips cards making your own toolsWhen you make your own tools, you get a double benefit from your woodworking. You get to learn new techniques as you make the tools, and you get to use the tools you make to help you make more things in the future.

In this way, tool making gives you much more of a benefit over other projects. Especially in the beginning.

New woodworkers tend to not have as many tools as those who have been making things for a long time. If you make several tools as your first projects, you will start to build up your tool catalog fairly quickly.

Not only will these tools be great to have in the shop, they will also be less expensive than the store bought versions. You will know how to use them better too.

This is because you actually made the tool yourself. When you make something, and then use it, you have a much deeper understanding of the tool than when you buy it. Using a tool you made yourself is an amazing experience that you have to feel first hand to understand.

What Tools Should You Make

In the beginning, anything you make is going to help you. I recommend that you make a sanding block, hand plane, and some sanding sticks at first. After that, you can start making things that are specific to the woodworking projects that you want to build.

My Heirloom Sanding Block Tutorial is a good place to start. You can make yourself a sanding block really easily, and start using it right away.
