Why I Made My Own Wedding Ring

why i made my own wedding ringA wedding ring is a very personal item, and I always knew that I wanted to make my ring instead of buy it. Having been a woodworker for a long time, the natural choice was to make it from a piece of wood.

When you wear a wooden ring, you run the risk of breaking it through normal daily activities. For a wedding ring, especially one that you would want to wear all the time, wearing something breakable is not an option.

After a lot of looking around, I decided to use a metal ring inside a wooden exterior. This is the ultimate union of function and looks, and gives you the best of both worlds.

A wood and metal ring allows you to take advantage of the strength of the metal, and ensures that your ring is going to last a lifetime.

The wood on the outside lets you show off the beauty as well as the different look of a wooden ring. There are many more reasons I made my own wedding ring, and even if you are new to woodworking, it’s easier to make than you think…

Wooden Rings Have A Rich History

One of the main reasons that I made my wedding ring myself is because of the history of wooden jewelry. Long before metal was discovered, people would adorn themselves with many other types of materials.

Older civilizations would use bone, shell, and wood to create adornments for their bodies, as well as gifts for other people. Long before metal was popular, talented woodworkers created beautiful rings from wood and other non-metal materials. Once softer metals like gold were discovered, the use of these early materials declined, and more people ended up with metal jewelry.

As new techniques emerged to work with this new substance, more and more people were making rings from metal. It’s only been recently that wooden rings have become popular again, and new woodworkers are creating detailed and beautiful rings from wood.

Making Your Wedding Ring Costs Less

When you make your wedding ring, the cost will be far less than most traditional wedding rings. The materials are less expensive, and since you make the ring yourself, you are not paying any labor costs either.

The metal core of the ring is where you can spend a little, and get something nicer if you want. My ring has a titanium core, but you can just as easily do a silver core. For a bit more money, a gold core can give you the best of both worlds.

The wood on the outside is so small that even the most exotic species will not cost very much for the amount you need. My ring is made from Briar, which is used in tobacco pipe making, and is a very interesting looking burl wood.

You Can Make a Very Unique Ring

Most wedding ring styles are replicated at every jewelry store that you visit. On top of that, the truly different styles are very expensive. When you make your wedding ring, you can create something that nobody else has.

It’s rare to see anyone with a wooden ring, even though they are becoming more and more popular. I am asked at least once a week to show someone my wedding ring, because they see it on my hand and get curious.

The rarity of wooden rings makes them unique, and when you make your ring, it is a one of a kind. This is a great feeling because you should not be walking around with the same ring as a thousand other people in the world.
