I Can Help You Get Started

Let me help you make your first guitarHere on Westfarthing Woodworks, there are many posts on guitar making. There are also many on woodworking that can teach you as well. Learning as much as you can while away from the shop is just one way to jump start your process.

Spend time reading the posts on making guitars that are on the site. There are many, and they all have something to teach you. The great thing about reading is you can do it in your spare time, and really learn a lot about making a guitar before you start.

Over time you will begin to become familiar with the names and terms that are used to describe the guitar making process. This will make it much easier for you when you start reading a guitar making book, and following the instructions. Another thing that will happen when you let me help you make a guitar is…

I Can Help You By Email

I answer a lot of emails every week. They range from people working on guitars to others that are finishing a project or building something. I really enjoy helping, and it gives me the opportunity to share in the projects of many people around the world.

Though I cannot provide any hands on learning or direct instruction like a dedicated teacher would, I always do my best to give you what you need through email. I answer all questions that I know the answers for, and I always try to point you in the right direction.

The best email for me is on my contact page. The email is long, so I recommend that you copy and paste it into your email program rather than writing it.

If you are absolutely new to making a guitar, you are going to need a couple good books. I have a list of the Top 5 Acoustic Guitar Making Books that I used when I first started. They helped me a lot, and they are great references.

I also wrote a book on Guitar Making and another on Guitar Making Tips. Both are great companions to any good step by step book.

For a quick primer on hand applied finishes, my 10 Step Guide to Wood Finishing will have you laying down a hand applied finish easily and quickly. You don’t need a lot of equipment to create a nice looking finish. This Free PDF explains everything, and I’ve finished many guitars with the same process.

It’s Not as Hard as It Seems

Anything new seems way bigger than it actually is. This includes guitar making. After you finish your first guitar you will feel a great sense of accomplishment. You will also watch the process shrink down dramatically from what it felt like before you started.

I really wish more people would just have some faith and start their guitar. There are a lot of woodworkers out there that think making an instrument is radically different from making anything else. It’s not. There are some differences, sure, but they are nothing that you can’t overcome with a little practice and patience.

I really recommend making a guitar. Especially if you play guitar, and you have some woodworking experience and tools, then you really should give it a shot. It’s easier than it seems once you are inside the process, and you can always shoot me an email and I will be glad to give you a hand.
