I’m Having a Baby Girl!

Well, I am very excited to announce that we are having a baby girl. We already have a son who is a little over two years old, and we are soon going to be blessed with another little bundle of joy. This is great news for both of us, because you are going to be seeing more woodworking tutorials geared towards making wooden toys.

New Baby Means New Woodworking Projects

wooden baby rattleI really enjoyed making all kinds of wooden toys for my son, and our new daughter will be no different. There are a few things that I wanted to make for my son that I never got around to, and I hope to share these with you as I make them.

My rattle design is pretty good, but I have decided to make something a little different for the next one. Also, I saw several wooden teething toys that I plan on making as well.

I am sure that my wife will also have a few things that she wants me to make for her. All of these will be posted on the site along with the directions for making them.

It is part of my normal process to take lots of pictures. This is something that I recommend all woodworkers do. It is also something that I cover in depth in my article on taking more pictures. The nice thing about my picture taking habit is that its really easy to turn those images into a nice tutorial for all of you.

Over 200,000 Words Published!

Westfarthing Woodworks has hit a milestone! I have been adding new content several times a week in an effort to bring you all that I have to offer in woodworking instruction. With the last couple articles, there are now over 200,000 words of content on the site! That’s a lot of great free woodworking tips, tricks, and tutorials.

westfarthing woodworks logoTo put that into perspective, that is more words than any of the Lord of the Rings books, and more than six of the seven Harry Potter books. These are some of my favorites, and I am proud that I have written so much great free content.

Some of my favorites are the String Art Heart, which shows you the secrets to making string art. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not about hammering nails.  Also, my Nine Ways to Make a Better Wooden Ring shows how you can use the materials that you already have to make great looking wooden rings.

Some of my longer articles cover Making a Wine Ceremony Box, which is a great project to make for your wedding for for a wedding gift. The box in the tutorial was given to a couple friends, and they used it on their wedding day. I have also showed people how to make charm beads, and how to make a wood pendant necklace.

It has been a real pleasure to write to all of you several times a week. Woodworking has changed my life, and I hope to change the lives of others. Once someone is successful at their first woodworking project, they tend to do even more. Giving people a place to go for fun projects is my passion. I hope to see you after I hit 500,000 words, and after 1,000,000.

Bookmark My Site – It’s Easier Than Spelling It

When I decided to open a business, I already knew that it would be different. I have a certain style, things that I like, and I wanted to do it my way. I also knew that nobody would ever be able to remember how to spell Westfarthing Woodworks in a search bar. So please, make it easy on yourself and bookmark my site. This one simple action will make it very easy for you to keep up with all the free content that I publish several times a week.

bookmark my siteMy logo is another example. I like the medieval time period, and fantasy literature/movies. Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, and Harry Potter are some of my favorite works.

With that in mind, I wanted to design a logo that reflected my personal interests, as well as incorporate what I do in my business.

All the business experts out there would agree that I failed on two major things. Keeping my name easy to spell, and making a simple memorable logo.

While I am sure they are correct, there is one key thing that any good business needs before any of that. It needs to be helpful, and provide people with something useful. It doesn’t matter how well branded you are, if your service or product is awful, nobody will come back. On the other hand, if your service is great, then it won’t matter as much what your branding looks like.

With all of this in mind, if you really like that I have to share, please take a moment and bookmark my site. If you came here directly, click on Westfarthing Woodworks at the top of the screen, and you will be taken to my home page. At that point, bookmark the site in your browser. Once you do, it will be a simple matter of clicking on the bookmark, and you will be taken right where you need to go.

If you have any questions about bookmarking my site, or wonder what the meaning is behind my ridiculously long business name, please leave a comment and I will be glad to answer them. Also, please share my work with your friends on Pinterest! Happy building.

I Helped Out at the Woodcraft Tool Show

Nearly every year for the past five years I have had the pleasure to help out at the annual Woodcraft Tool Show. The show happens in late January every year, and several different woodworkers and vendors attend. Having worked for Woodcraft in the past, the owner invites me out to help every year.

woodcraft tool showI was at the Chandler Arizona location, which is on the North West corner of Country Club and Elliot Road. I was extremely excited to see that they did a complete re-model of the store.

The new look is amazing, and it’s much more open looking. This was a huge part of the success of the show, because the thousands of customers could easily get through the store.

On top of the new look, there were far more tents and vendors outside. Each year, the event really draws a crowd and this year was no exception. The tents were set up where they nearly touched each other, and everyone was excited to watch the live demonstrations and learn from the special guests.

This year, they had Chad Stanton from Stanton Fine Furniture, who I had the pleasure of picking up and driving to the event. He is a really down to earth woodworker, and loves to share his passion with anyone he meets. He was center stage at the event, demonstrating his woodworking skill. Every time I looked outside, he always had a gathering around him.

woodcraft tool showWhen I go to the Woodcraft Tool Show, I work for the owner. I help set up the event, run power to the vendors, and get them what they need for their demonstrations. It’s a pleasure for me, and I meet many great people.

The rest of the day I enjoy my time assisting customers with questions, helping people to their cars, and talking woodworking. I tend to spend the majority of my time in the finishing section, which is where I am the most comfortable.

In woodworking, there are hundreds of different disciplines, so it is impossible to know and understand them all. I primarily make smaller projects, turnings, wooden rings, tobacco pipes, and guitars. All of those require a great finish, so I spend my time helping other people create a beautiful finish on their projects.

I put in a solid eleven hours that day between setting up and helping out. I met several great people, and saw many exceptional projects. The Arizona woodworkers that attend the show have a ton of talent, and they create wonderful works of woodworking art. Many of these were on display for customers so see first hand.

A Tool Show is a great way to get out and meet new woodworkers. It’s also a way to learn about new techniques, new tools, and see what’s new in the field. I encourage you to look in your local area for a similar show, and take advantage of the opportunity. Getting out and meeting real people that have extraordinary talent can help you.

While reading and watching videos is helpful, there is nothing like being able to ask a real live person a question. At a show, you have dozens of people that are all excited to share their passion for woodworking, and you can learn quite a bit.

If you have any questions about my adventure at the Woodcraft Tool Show, please leave a comment and I will be glad to answer them. Also, please share my work with your friends online. It helps me share my passion for woodworking, and brings new people into the craft. Happy building.
